Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to determine the relationship between mental health of students at a university in Cali, Colombia, and their engagement in leisure activities during the return to classes in the post-pandemic period of COVID-19. Method: An observational study with an analytical cross-sectional design was conducted. A total of 2,027 undergraduate students participated in the Health and Well-being Survey, which analysed both positive and negative indicators of mental health alongside various types of leisure activities. Results: University students exhibited high levels of negative mental health indicators, including moderate to severe levels of depression, anxiety, and stress, as well as moderate loneliness. Conversely, in terms of positive indicators, most participants showed high levels of resilience and moderate psychological well-being. Students engaged in solo activities, group activities, cultural arts, and physical activities. Those who participated in leisure activities reported lower levels of negative indicators and higher levels of positive mental health compared to those who did not. Conclusions: The results highlight the importance for the university to encourage students to engage in leisure activities intentionally as a strategy to promote mental health, leveraging the existing spaces and activities currently available.
