10 Years of the Labor Market in Colombia for Women

Abstract

Over the past 10 years, the Colombian labor market has undergone significant transformations, impacting women in distinct ways. This chapter examines the evolution of labor participation, wages, and income, as well as differences based on marital status and region, which are crucial factors in the female labor environment. Through a descriptive analysis using data from Colombia's Gran Encuesta Integrada de Hogares for the years 2013 and 2023, the main findings and trends of the last decade are identified. Variables such as employment, unemployment, formality, informality, labor participation, educational level, labor income, marital status, and geographic area are examined. The aim is to highlight the achievements and challenges of the labor market, including a decrease in labor informality due to recent regulations and an increase in educational levels, albeit with lower labor participation and decreased wages. This analysis provides a foundation for future research and more effective and equitable policies. This chapter is organized into a literature review, sociodemographic overview, activities and labor participation by gender, analysis of employees, labor income, and labor participation by geographic area and marital status and concludes with recommendations to improve gender equity in the labor market.
