Violines, tamboras y trompetas: produccion cultural musical en el valle geografico del rio cauca.

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

Based on the documentation and analysis of traditional music in three counties of South Western Colombia, the proposed study aims to understand (a) the different social relationships that are established around traditional musical practices, (b) the multiple kinds of capital (social, symbolic or economic) that is put at stake in these relationships, and (c) the ways how traditional musicians articulate their work with (or resist) practices related with cultural industries on a large scale. On an empirical aspect, the study will focus on the experience of a vocal group from the county of Villa Rica (Cauca), a brass group from the county of Santander de Quilichao (Cauca), and a fiddle group from the county of Suarez (Cauca). On a conceptual aspect, research and analysis will be based on Pierre Bourdieu’s theories about social fields of cultural production.
