Many people knew it, everyone was silent. InterBolsa's financial scandal in Colombia

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

The purpose of this paper is to explain the determinants and characteristics of Interbolsa fraud, its contextualization and social construction in the post-SOX era, where it is evident that the established control schemes are not enough to prevent fraud in companies with broad national influence, and that in emerging countries the pattern of developed countries in financial scandals is not followed. This in deep analysis seeks to broaden the perspectives used to understand fraud and its forms of occurrence, which can enrich the perspectives of researchers and practitioners on these matters. In this case, an important responsibility at least by omission from the regulators of the Colombian stock market can be attributed. We also show evidence of audit failures, collusion and privileged information. The important events of the scandal were committed in public, under the guise of legality, without anyone noticing the irregularities and taking measures to avoid the serious consequences, despite the clear warning signs. The connections of the heads of Interbolsa with influential people and with the Colombian stock market can also be highlighted.
