Description
La Tertulia is one of the oldest art museums in the Southwest of Colombia. Founded in 1956, it evolved over the years into a visual arts museum. Based on the large number of exhibitions displayed at La Tertulia during the past 60 years, this study presents a mixed method approach for better understanding of the growth of institutionalized art activities in Cali. This project pretends to show the emergent relationships between agents in the exhibition space of La Tertulia since 1956. a database of 830 exhibitions was generated, on which we perform data mining and network analysis to explore the metrics, structure and statistics of a network of relationships between artists and curators. The analysis of the network focuses on characterizing and mapping the evolution of: degree centrality measurements (i.e., answering questions like who is most connected artist, who has the highest betweenness measure, etc.), community structures (i.e.,hierarchical clustering) and cluster analysis (i.e., attachment and triad formation). The identified patterns help construct narratives that can be articulated with typical qualitativeapproaches used in sociological and humanities research methodologies.
