Description

The purpose of this project is the adaptation of the Bearslee Preventive Intervention Program for Depression for the use of Colombian Families. The adaptation involves literature review, pilot testing of the adapted manual, and open trial of the adapted intervention with 24 Colombian families in Cali, Colombia, experiencing maternal depression. This adaptation will also include conducting the intervention in Spanish, expanding it to include the contextual experience of Colombian families in their daily lives, with special attention to cultural metaphors, and using a strength-based, family centered approach. The families will complete pre intervention and post intervention measures for maternal depression, child behavioral difficulties, global functioning, life stresses, and an interview that includes questions about psychological, social and economic stressors, resilience, and family awareness of parental depression. The post-intervention interview will focus on satisfaction, distress, benefits of the adapted intervention, and therapeutic alliance. Results will be provided, revealing if the adaptation was non-stressful, useful and with similar effects to the original intervention. In addition, information about the preventionists´ fidelity to the revised manual and the therapeutic alliance with the mothers will be provided. Conclusions and recommendations will follow.
