Dr. Luis Miguel Renjifo is a tropical ecologist and conservation biologist. His trajectory has been focused on nature conservation through research, education, and executive positions at research and academic institutions. He is a professor at the Department of Ecology, School of Environmental and Rural Studies, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (Colombia), and is a senior scientist in Colombia´s national system of science and technology. His school has an interdisciplinary and applied approach to analyze different facets of the interaction society – nature, including biodiversity conservation. In terms of research, he has studied the risk of extinction of bird species in Colombia since the late 80´s. He is the sole or senior author of the Colombian Red List (1998) and Red Data Books for the Birds of Colombia 2002, 2014, 2016. He has studied the effect of landscape change and composition on conservation of forest birds, as well as the development of landscape management tools for biodiversity conservation in rural landscapes. This led to the first on site establishment of biological corridors in South America (through forest restoration) to recover connectivity among large remnant forest. More recently he has coauthored of studies on the state of the world’s birds, on how many bird and mammal extinctions has recent conservation action prevented at a global scale, and on how landscape changes have triggered human-raptor conflict in rural regions in Colombia. Currently, he is conducting research on the motivations of people for birdwatching as a leisure activity, teaming with colleagues from the social sciences and engineering. This is relevant because Colombia has the potential to become one of the most important birdwatching destinations in the world. He is an enthusiastic birdwatcher and conservationist.
In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. This person’s work contributes towards the following SDG(s):
