Personal profile

Her research interests are colonial history, the history of the African diaspora, and the intersections between race and politics. Her work focuses specifically on the discourses and experiences of blackness and their relationship with the construction of political identities within the framework of political transformations of the 18th and 19th centuries. Her most recent line of research revolves around black geographies and she is currently working on a long-term environmental history of the relationships between the Afro-indigenous inhabitants of the Magdalena River and the riverine geography.

Among her most relevant publications is the book Government and calidad in the colonial order. The categories of mestizaje in the province of Mariquita in the second half of the 18th century (Universidad de los Andes 2012) and the articles “Free people of African descent and jurisdictional politics in eighteenth-century New Granada: the Bogas of the Magdalena River”, “Of “a new king in Santa Fe” and other schisms” Black, mulatto and zambo people in the Comunero Revolt (1781)” and “The enslaved mobilities of the Río Grande de la Magdalena, New Kingdom of Granada, s. XVIII”. Her research has obtained funding from the Colombian Institute of Anthropology and History, Colciencias, the John Carter Brown Library and the European Union.
