Carlos Justino Novoa Matallana S.J., has been linked to the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana since 1994, as a full time professor and researcher. He is currently part of the Department of Theology and serves in the Graduate Unit of the Faculty of Theology. Since 2020, he is a member of the Group of Social Thought of the Church.
Throughout his career at the Universidad Javeriana, he has participated as a researcher in various research groups, addressing multidisciplinary topics. Among them are: “The fact of death in medical practice” (1998-2004), “The social and ethical environment in the medical treatment of dementia” (2003-2006), “The ethical dimension of teaching and professional practice of Industrial Design in Colombia” (2011-2018), “The praxis of social justice in the practice of jurisprudence” (1997-2007) and “Towards a new society and economy for Colombia” (2019-2024), where he served as principal investigator during the years 2023 and 2024.
His academic and research work extends to his participation as guest professor and advisor in various institutions and events. He has given workshops on religious life, public ethics, bioethics, democracy and human sexuality, among others, for religious, public officials, academics and professionals from different areas. He has also been an ethical advisor to the board of directors of a psychiatric hospital and an ethical analyst for the UN Human Development Program. His experience as a commentator during the visit of Pope Francis to Colombia and his work as a guest professor at the Jesuit University Loyola de Andalucía and at the Seminary of Havana, Cuba, highlight his wide recognition in the theological and ethical field.
