I hold a Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy from Universidad Nacional de Colombia, followed by a PhD in Biological Sciences from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana. Currently, I serve as a Professor and Director at the Institute for the Study of Inborn Errors of Metabolism at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana.
My doctoral research constituted pioneering work in the field of gene therapy for Morquio A, wherein I conducted groundbreaking in vivo tests utilizing adeno-associated viral vectors. Building upon this foundation, my tenure as a professor and researcher at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana has seen me delve deeper into gene therapy for Morquio A, now employing lentiviral vectors, while also spearheading investigations into the potential of CRISPR/Cas9 as a revolutionary tool for addressing various inborn errors of metabolism. Moreover, my contributions extend to the production and characterization of five recombinant lysosomal enzymes within microorganisms, namely bacteria and yeast. These endeavors have yielded promising results, highlighting the substantial potential of enzymes synthesized through these expression systems for the advancement of enzyme replacement therapies. Additionally, my work in glycoengineering has enabled the tailored production of enzymes with specific N-glycosylations, further enhancing their therapeutic utility. Furthermore, I have leveraged bioinformatics tools to deepen our understanding of inborn errors of metabolism. My expertise encompasses diverse areas such as protein modeling, mutation effects, docking, and systems biology.
Specifically, my research focuses on three main avenues: elucidating the cellular and molecular underpinnings of inborn errors of metabolism, refining diagnostic methodologies for these conditions, and harnessing biotechnological innovations to address them effectively. I have trained 4 postdoctoral fellows and 45 students (30 undergraduate, 8 master, and 7 PhD students) as a mentor.
