Personal profile

Amada Carolina Perez Benavides, PhD in History, El Colegio de México, is Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana. She has been director of the Doctorate of Social and Human Sciences at the same university and director of the research group "Cultural practices, imaginaries, and representations". Her research interests are the history of Latin America of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; particularly, the way its inhabitants have been represented by multiple cultural artifacts, the strategies used by different institutions to control the population, and the tactics put into play by individuals and communities to negotiate, evade or reinterpret them. She participated in the curatorial team of the exhibition Historias de un grito. 200 años de ser colombianos (National Museum of Colombia, 2010) and worked in the Educational Division of the same institution from 2000 to 2003. In recent years, she has been committed to collaborative research proposals, especially in processes of social museology with indigenous peoples.
