Personal profile

Alfonso Ramos-Cañón is a Full Professor at the School of Engineering of Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (PUJ) and currently serves as the Chair of the Department of Civil Engineering. He holds a Ph.D. in Engineering and a Master’s degree in Geotechnics. His areas of expertise include computational geomechanics, granular flows, and geotechnical risk analysis.

Professor Ramos-Cañón has supervised three Ph.D. candidates, two postdoctoral researchers, and 25 Master's theses focused on geotechnical and geological hazard topics. He has authored over sixty scientific articles and three books related to geological risk.

Over the past five years, he has led publicly funded research projects on debris flows and geological hazards, as well as more than 15 privately funded projects. He has been awarded the Colombian National Engineering Prize twice (2013, 2019) and the Biennial Javeriana Research Award three times (2015, 2021, 2023).

Since 2015, Professor Ramos-Cañón has been a member of the National Commission for Higher Education Quality of the Ministry of Education of Colombia, and since 2018, he has represented the education sector on the District Advisory Council for Risk Management and Climate Change of Bogotá, convened by the Bogotá Environmental Secretariat.

From 2014 to 2016, he served as an advisor to the National Science and Technology Program in Geosciences of the Ministry of Science and Technology of Colombia. Between 2016 and 2018, and again since 2021, he has represented private universities on the National Advisory Commission for Research in Disaster Risk Management. He was also the coordinator for the update of the Colombian Slope Stability Manual, commissioned by INVIAS (the National Roads Institute).
